Water Extractable Organic Carbon & Organic Nitrogen

WEOC & WEON

Summary

A cold-water soil extraction procedure is used to determine the total water extractable organic carbon (WEOC) and total water extractable organic nitrogen (WEON). These measurements are a snapshot of what is available for plant uptake at the time of sampling and may not reflect the total pool of organic carbon and organic nitrogen. For total organic carbon, the extract is acidified to remove inorganic carbon and then analyzed using a high temperature combustion reactor with an oxidative catalyst. The total organic nitrogen is calculated by subtracting the inorganic nitrogen from the total nitrogen. Total nitrogen is determined by combustion and the inorganic nitrogen (NH4-N and NO3-N) is determined using a continuous flow analyzer (CFA).
